Ironing Girls. Oil on canvas. Private collection.

I’ve hung the Ironing Girls in my bedroom and they are the last thing I see at night as I turn out the light. The colours are astonishing but what I love most about this painting is the kick-assedness of the women. They don’t give a fig that they are being watched and are unapologetically themselves. The more I look at this scene, the more I notice. Look at the full sleeves of tattoos on the arms of the woman to the right of the painting. That would have been very transgressive. I can’t decide whether they are back stage in a theatre or in a bordello but, either way, these are women you wouldn’t mess with!

Hello From Kevin!

Thank you for looking at my website. I hope you have found a painting you love.

I will be using this blog to post updates about work-in-progress, commissions, and also to share responses from the new owners of my paintings. I always enjoy hearing about the way people respond to my work and how they feel about their new painting.

The Spinning Girl – 30th October 2024

I absolutely adore The Spinning Girl. I bought this painting without thinking where we would hang it, but it works perfectly at the top of the stairs. I can’t get over how Kevin has created so much movement in the piece – the twist of the skirts and petticoats as they play catch up with the movement of the dancer. Close up, the interplay of colour and texture is extraordinary – almost impressionistic. I feel joy every time I look at it (which is often, given its prominent position). The Spinning Girl stands in her own spotlight, looking away from us, and I wonder whether she’s backstage, practising in the wings or in a music hall or theatre. Was she warned by her mother not to go on the stage? She seems to demand a story.

My partner and I dance as a hobby so this painting is even more special to us because it represents an activity that brought us together. – Sarah
