The Spinning Girl – 30th October 2024
I absolutely adore The Spinning Girl. I bought this painting without thinking where we would hang it, but it works perfectly at the top of the stairs. I can’t get over how Kevin has created so much movement in the piece – the twist of the skirts and petticoats as they play catch up with the movement of the dancer. Close up, the interplay of colour and texture is extraordinary – almost impressionistic. I feel joy every time I look at it (which is often, given its prominent position). The Spinning Girl stands in her own spotlight, looking away from us, and I wonder whether she’s backstage, practising in the wings or in a music hall or theatre. Was she warned by her mother not to go on the stage? She seems to demand a story.
My partner and I dance as a hobby so this painting is even more special to us because it represents an activity that brought us together. – Sarah
